CORDis
EHR stands for Correspondence, Operating Records, Reports
and Discharge Summary information system Electronic Health
Record.
It is an electronic Clinical Documentation
or Transcription System written with FileMaker Pro that has
been developed by Dynamic Solutions for and with Barwon Health
(The Geelong Hospital).
Barwon Health has over 40,000 inpatients
each year. Each of these patients requires a Discharge Summary
to be prepared for them and forwarded to their general practitioner
(GP). In the past Discharge summaries were handwritten and
then posted to GPs which resulted in the GP not receiving the
Discharge Summary for days or even weeks after the actual discharge
of the patient. Barwon Health wanted to improve this situation
and contracted Dynamic Solutions to develop a system to do
this CORDisEHR (CORDis) was the result.
CORDis produces electronic discharge
summaries which are faxed to the patients GP with the result
being a clear and legible Discharge Summary arriving at the
GP's office within hours of the patient being discharged, in
fact many are received by the GP before the patient has even
left the hospital!
CORDis was firstly introduced into the
department of surgery but within twelve months due to demand
from other departments it was in use within most of the hospital.
Currently over 70% of the hospital's
discharge summaries are completed in CORDis. The 30% that are
still completed manually are done so due to logistical reasons
such as lack of computers in some areas.
The success of CORDis with Discharge
Summaries led to the expansion of it's functionality to include:
Operation notes, out patient notes, surgical & trainee
logs, sentinel events, various forms and PBS prescribing. All
of these as well as clinical information are linked to the
patient's episode of care enabling easy reference when completing
discharge summaries.
In February 2002 Barwon Health/CORDis
was the first hospital in Australia to implement Electronic
PBS prescribing
CORDis continues to grow by increasing
its capabilities, driven by the demand of it's users.
